David John Yancik Obituary

David John Yancik of Mt. Olive, Illinois passed away on January 25, 2025 at 2:43 p.m. at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL with his family by his side. He was 89 years old.


 


 


 

Dave Yancik was born in Mt. Olive, Illinois on May 21, 1935 to John Steven and Anna (Tomso) Yancik both of Mt. Olive, Illinois. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic School graduating eighth grade in 1949 and graduated from Mt. Olive High School in 1953. Dave was married to Norma Jean Loeffler on July 13, 1957 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Dave & Norma were happily married for 67 years. Dave was employed by Illinois Central Railroad in Chicago from 1953 to 1956 as a machinist apprentice. Beginning in January of 1956, Dave was employed at Granite City Steel where he retired in 1996 after many positions with majority of his later years as a Roughing Mill Coiling Operator.


 


 


 

Dave was active in many organizations including the Steel Workers Union, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, St. John Paul II Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and Turner Hall. From 1977 to 2023, Dave served as a Trustee for the Mt. Olive Township and was their longest serving member on the Board of Trustees. During his tenure as Trustee, Dave was instrumental in the acquisition of the property to establish the Mt. Olive Township Park and the building of the park’s lake.


 


 


 

Dave is survived by his wife Norma, two sons: Steve (Jeanice) Yancik and David (Jo Marie) Yancik, two daughters: Phyllis (Dan) Kasten and Diane (Bryan) McPherson, grandchildren Taylor Yancik, Tanner (Hailey) Yancik, Kyle Kasten, Andrew Yancik, Jonathon Yancik, sisters: Joan Langewisch and Clara Dobrino, a sister-in-law: Kathleen Yancik and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.


 


 


 

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Ruthmary Zubal and brother-in-law, Clarence Zubal, brother, Robert Yancik and a brother-in-law Tom Dobrino.


 


 


 

Visitation will take place Friday, January 31, 2025 at St. John Paul II Church in Mt. Olive, IL from 9 until 11 a.m. when the funeral mass will begin with Father Thomas Hagstrom officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Mt. Olive, IL. Followed by a lunch for friends and family to take place at St. John Paul II Church Hall.


 


 


 

Memorials are suggested to Chapman Cemetery and Mt. Olive Academic Foundation.
