Ellen Scheller Obituary

Ellen Lorene Scheller, 87 of Staunton, IL, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024 at 6:50 A.M. Born April 22, 1936 in the Mt. Olive Township she was the daughter of late Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm and Lorene Sophie Adden DeVries. Ellen was baptized May 17, 1936, and confirmed in her faith on March 21st, 1948 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Mt. Olive, IL. She attended Zion Lutheran School, Mt. Olive Jr High and graduated from the Mt. Olive High School in 1953.

She married Donald (Duck) Herbert Scheller on April 23, 1955, at Zion Lutheran Church. After one year of marriage, they moved into their home in rural Staunton on Sugar Shack Lane and stayed. He passed away on April 2, 2004.

Ellen lived in Springfield and worked for the Secretary of State’s Office in the Driver’s License Division from graduation until her marriage. In 1974, she went to work for the Mt. Olive School District as a food server/cook and then as the Food Service Director for 23 years, retiring in 1997. She enjoyed working with her co-workers and being around the children. After retirement, she enjoyed her lunch outings. She ventured out with her surviving classmates of 1953 as well as monthly lunch dates with a group of retired teachers and workers from the school.

Ellen was a fun and caring person who was loved by many. She never met a stranger and was always there to lend a helping hand or a sandwich, whichever you needed.

She is survived by 4 children, Luan (Tim) Shevcik, Ron (Stephanie) Scheller of Mt. Olive, Dale (Bethany) Scheller of Weldon, and Denise (Gary) Atteberry of Divernon. Four grandchildren, Dylan Scheller of Staunton, Cody (Sarah) Scheller of Chestnut, Alexandra (Blake) Huddleston of Taylorville and Colin Atteberry of Portales, NM. Three Great Granddaughters, Lilliana and Natallie Scheller and Harper Huddleston. Two nephews, Rich (Suzanne) DeVries of Florence, AZ and Ray (Jamie) DeVries of Mt. Olive and every other kid that grew up in the vicinity of Sugar Shack Lane.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her parents, her brothers Elmer and Mervin DeVries, a sister-in-law, Ruth DeVries, and a nephew John Lotter.

Visitation will take place at the Union Miners Cemetery on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 10 - 11 a.m. Graveside Services will begin at 11 a.m. and will be officiated by Rev. Zack Krampien.
