Walter “Wally” Ruemmler
Walter “Wally” Ruemmler passed away on March 1, 2026 at 4 a.m. at his home in Mt. Olive, IL. He was 79 years old.
Wally was born on November 25,1946 in St. Louis, MO to William A. and Hervana (Muskopf) Ruemmler. He attended Worden Grade School in Worden, IL and graduated from Granite City High School in Granite City, IL. Wally served in the United States Air Force in Vietnam from March of 1966 until his honorable discharge in December of 1969. His military accomplishments include: the National Service medal, the Vietnam Service medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal, the Air Force Commendation medal, and the United States Air Force Good Conduct medal. On March 1,1974, he married Sharon (Hood) Ruemmler in Granite City, Illinois, and she survives. Wally was employed by Georgia Pacific in Mt. Olive, IL from 1979 until his retirement in 1995. His working career continued as he drove for Hogan Transport, Cavallo Bus Lines and the Mt. Olive School District. Wally was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Star Touring and Riding Motorcycle Club. He was an EMT for the Mt. Olive Fire Department, a Boy Scout leader, and a volunteer at the Mt. Olive Care Center. In his free time, Wally enjoyed fishing and hunting, a round of golf, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Wally is survived by his wife, Sharon, two sons: Matthew (Carrie) Ruemmler, Marc (Emily) Ruemmler, a daughter, Terracee Joiner and Jason, grandchildren: Grace, Aiden, Raegan, Ethan, and Alex Ruemmler.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Hervana Ruemmler, two brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 5, 2026 from 9 - 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church followed by the service at 11 a.m. officiated by Reverend Walther. Interment will follow immediately after at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to lunch at Immanuel Lutheran Educational Building after interment.
